    Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music

About five years ago, a friend of mine introduced me to Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music. Since then, I have been a huge advocate of the site. The way he diagrams the influential progression of dance music is fascinating and eye opening. He provides excellent musical examples and attributes them to advents in technology, including examples of the Technics 1200, and Roland TB-303, TR-808, and TR-909 drum machines.

While at NYU, I studied music history under the great Walter Reinhold. His lectures emphasized that in order to understand a piece of music, one must also understand the time period in which it was produced. Therefore, his courses focused on a broad interpretation of all music. Professor Reinhold has always been an influence of mine and I have always felt that Ishkur’s site followed his same philosophy.
